Splitting Night Duties With Your Partner
A draft guide to sharing overnight baby care fairly, and how a shared log keeps both parents on the same page without waking each other.
The nights are hard, and they are much harder when one parent carries them alone. This draft post looks at a few simple ways to split overnight duty — and how a shared log keeps both parents in sync.
Pick a split that fits your feeds
There is no single right system. A few common ones:
- Shift the night in halves. One parent takes the early stretch, the other takes the later one, so each gets a solid block of sleep.
- Alternate wake-ups. You trade off feed by feed. This works well once feeds are a bit more spaced out.
- One does nights, the other does mornings. The morning parent takes the baby early so the night parent can catch up.
The goal is simple: make sure neither parent is running on empty every single night.
Use a shared log so nobody has to ask
When both parents track in the same app, the handoff needs no conversation. Whoever wakes up can see the last feed, the last change, and the last nap without waking the other person to ask.
That matters most for dads and non-birthing partners, who can take on more of the load when they have the same information at their fingertips.
Protect the off-duty parent's sleep
If it is not your shift, actually rest. A shared log means you can check what happened in the morning instead of surfacing for every noise. Trading real, uninterrupted sleep is the whole point.
